Eid al-Adha 2019 and 2020

About 15 percent of people in Uganda are Muslim, and Eid al-Adha, the “feast of sacrifice”, is an official public holiday across the country.

Early on Eid morning, mostly the men will go to mosque or a prayer centre to pray and listen to a sermon. After morning prayers, they will return home to feast with family and friends and celebrate the day.

Eid al-Adha commemorates the Koranic account of the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael at Allah’s command – though ultimately Ibrahim did not need to go through with the sacrifice. Thus, on this day, many sheep, goats, and other animals are sacrificed. As many cannot afford a sacrificial animal, however, another Muslim family that can afford a sacrifice will share some meat with the poor.
